P4 (NEW)

Proposal / Treatment

Purpose

Our music video is going to be heavily inspired by 80s music videos and will include effects, props and costumes that all originate from the 80s. It will start with the main character walking down the street, taking out a Walkman and listening to Everything She Wants by Wham! This is the song of choice for our music video.

The beginning/intro sequence will be 16:9 aspect ratio and will be recorded with a standard DSLR camera. This will then transition into the standard aspect ratio used for visual media in the 80s: 4:3. When the ratio changes, the recorded footage will also be edited to look like VHS footage. The lighting throughout the video will be mostly bright and colour to mirror the stylistic nature of other 80s music videos.

Target Audience

Our target audience is going to be 16 – 40+, as this is a wide range of people that encompasses both people born in the 80s and those of the younger generation that have become interested in the trending 80s culture. Furthermore, a lot of the themes in the music video will relate to those of both a younger generation and older generation.

Distribution

Our music video will be distributed on platforms where it can be easily accessed by a large volume of people. A perfect example of this is on YouTube. YouTube also gives our a video a chance to go viral.

Legal and Ethical

Due to our music video including a ready-made, popular song, being copyrighted on YouTube is unavoidable. Furthermore, it is important that our actors sign model release forms in order to get their permission to be filmed. We must also be granted permission to film in certain sets and on certain properties.

Proposed Content

Some of the proposed content that we have in mind is focusing on two characters: the main singer and another 80s inspired protagonist. They will both be lip-syncing and allows the switching between the two so the music video stays interesting to the viewer. Including two protagonists also allows for the potential for two perspectives in the video.

In the context of the music video, the locations will differ between on the street as well as having studio spaces for places that have customisable and artificial lighting. Some of the setting will also match with the topics of the lyrics, such as an office/desk looking space when the singer is talking about working. Overall, there will be a variation of both indoor and outdoor locations.

Genre & Themes

The genre of the music video is 80s pop. Therefore, it will feature someone (usually the main artist of the song) throughout the video, lip-syncing to the song. It will also include bright, colourful lighting as this was common in the 80s. Stylistically, through the cinematography and visual effects, the look of 80s music videos will also be recreated.

Our music video will include a theme of materialism as the song itself follows the story of a relationship that is falling apart. The music video won’t focus on the narrative so much and will keep a relatively positive façade throughout.

Budget

The budget of our music video production is relatively small. The little budget that we do have will be spent on props and costumes to emphasise the 80s feel. If we were to have a bigger budget, we could potentially have rented studio spaces or other recording spaces. Furthermore, we could have sourced actors out, instead of taking part in the video ourselves.

When it comes to personnel, a lot of different roles will need to be covered. Below is a list of the production team for our music video:

Setting / Equipment list:

Choice of Lighting

Throughout the music video we will use different styles of lighting, depending on the environment/setting and also the mood of the scene.

For the outdoor shots, we will be relying on natural light from the sun as the main light source.

Another one of our shots is a close up, with the subject being illuminated through either two point or chiaroscuro lighting depending on the colours.

Another lighting style that we will use is 3 point lighting. This will give an almost halo effect to the subjects and mimic the “glow” that 80s music videos had.

Choice of Camera

One of the cameras that we will use for the high quality, normal looking footage in the 16:9 ratio is a DSLR.

The main camera that we will be using is a camcorder. This will give a more 80s style look to the footage.

Most of our footage will be filmed handheld, however, some of the footage (such as close ups) will be static on a tripod in order to ensure that the shots are not too shaky.

Choice of Setting

A choice of scenery would be a public street. However, this could cause issues as we would have little to no control over lighting with us being outside and the sun glaring over us. Moreover, another issue that we could encounter could be the public areas that we would film in. Members of the public could accidentally walk into the shot.

Another choice of setting is a studio space. This would allow us to control the lighting completely – using artificial lighting and projectors. The filming process could also go ahead undisturbed.
